I have but one word to say. Wow. The movie was set to start at 7:10. There was a minor glitch at the theatre shortly after it started (with the colors looking kind of odd and the sound crapping out - on opening night..). Other then that though, the theatre wasn't bad (it really is a very nice theatre, but that was kind of annoying..). But anyways. I left the theatre with, really, three distinct feelings. Stunned, impressed, and suprised. Simply put, the movie was freaking sweet. Awesome. Many other words could be used to describe it as well. As my friend/co-worker Nate put it, it should get a flaming two thumbs up. Aside from some minor issues with crappy acting, I can't think of any worthwhile complaints. The screenplay followed the book very closely, with very little cut out. And aside from the discovery of the wardrobe (I remember all for of them seeing it first in the book), I don't know of anything that was changed.
Every now and then, excellent movies are made, and very little marketing really goes towards them.
The Jacket is such a movie. It was released in theaters earlier this year. I've had the DVD from blockbuster here for a few weeks now, (possibly over a month now...) and have meant to watch it. Now that I finally got around to it, read on for the review.
I have but one word to describe this movie. Brilliant.
It would be impossible to try and duplicate or remake the original. There really is no replacement for Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. However, Tim Burton with the help of Jonny Depp were able to make an absolutely brilliant re-adaption to such a classic story.
Wonka is portrayed as an eccentric and in some ways social inept man. Many features of the original movie and book are here, but in a very Burton-esk way. The room with the chocolate river and waterfall (or rather.. chocolatefall) is full of editable trees and grass and other plant type structures. Although, the tree's looked more like giant mushrooms....
Ok, so, I skipped the radio show (which, looking at the IRC logs wasn't the best show ever, so I do feel better about missing it now :)), and went to see The Incredibles with the NaNo group. Excellent movie, very enjoyable, and very funny. I'm a huge fan of pixar, and always have been really, and The Incredibles is another excellent work by them.
And as for NaNo, i'm almost to 3,000 words, only 46 words short, which I should be able to get quick after I get up in the morning. Then I need to get started on the next chapter or two and get a good 5 or 6k done tommorow. At least. I'll still be behind, but at least I won't be screwed :)
Ok... The Perfect Score wasn't all that great... but thats about what I expected... The Butterfly Effect, however, dramaticaly surpassed any and all my expectations. I finally saw Donnie Darko a couple months ago.. and found it to be unbelievable great. There are plenty of other reviews out there for that.. so I'll wait until I see the Directors Cut to post a review of that...
Now... The Butterfly Effect... Now... we watched the Directors Cut.. and I'm not sure what changed from the theatrical version, but, regardless, this was probably the best movie I've ever seen. Lord Of The Rings was great. Donnie Darko was fscking awesome. Lost in Translation was just great as well. The Butterfly Effect surpassed them all. Chaos Theory. Time Travel. Love. These key ideas, and more basically created the movie. Donnie Darko had a very similar underlying theme, but this was a bit more. Donnie Darko's love was of Gretchen. Evan's love of his mother and family and friends.
So... after Anchorman, we (a friend of mine, and I... duh.. :)) went, had lunch, stopped by Hollywood video, looked around, and decided to pick up The Butterfly Effect and The Perfect Score.
I want to try and keep these reviews/blogs seperate.. So this will be a review of The Perfect Score (since we watched that one first), and then I will finish up with The Butterfly Effect in the next blog).
Now... we didn't go straight home.. we stopped by the mall, people watched for a bit, trying to find something todo...
So.. after some length of time not doing much, we went home and watched the Perfect Score...
Ok.. I saw "Anchorman" today and must say it was an awesome movie, and typical of Will Ferrell's unbelievable talent. All in all, another great movie.
It looks like its based somewhere around the 70's and tells the story of the local news anchor and how news and T.V. was once honest and told the news instead of fabricating the crap we see today.
There isn't much to really say besides its Will Ferrell with Steven Carell (of the Daily Show), Christina Applegate and many others. In addition Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller and other great comedians added to the hilarity.
Overall, Anchorman was an awesome comedy and worth the money for an hour or two of laughs.
Ok... So, I decided to see Dodgeball today. Overall, very funny movie. The basic premise is White Goodman ownes a huge, national gym chain (Global Gym) and Peter Le Fleur owns a small local gym called Average Joes. Basically.. Peter is way behind on morgage payments and what not, and is about to loose his gym.. and Global Gym wants the land to build a parking garage. In order to save the gym, they enter a Dodgeball tournament in Las Vegas.
Lots of hilarity ensues and is really a great comedy with plenty of adulterated humer and fun. Good comedy for any fans of Ben Stiller or Vince Vaughn.
Here we are for the third iteration of the nulldomain movie review segment of the nulldomain blog. I just returned from seeing Spiderman 2 and decided a review thingy would be best while the movie is still fresh in my mind. And so here it goes....
This movie takes place somewhere near 2 years after Spiderman. Peters concentration and mindset is weekening and is "loosing" his powers as a result. And that is a big part of the movie; Peter struggles to see who he is and what he has to do. Sometimes you have to give up what you want most, even your dreams because of the responsibility you have.
I figured I'd try to make this a semi-regular feature and call this the "Nulldomain Movie Review" (subject to change). The first movie I reviewed was Chronicles of Riddick, aka Pitch Black 2. Kick ass movie, and great as a first, or a sequel. Now, we shall look at everyones favorite feline comic cat, Garfield.
The movie is about Garfield, and, pretty much just about Garfield. Almost all of the movie is through his eyes, and leads the viewer into understanding just who Garfield is and the life he lives. The movie also goes into how Odie came into the life of Jon and Garfield; through Garfields vet (aka Jennifer Love Hewitt).
